For most of us, the selection of the footstool to match our wing chair or sofa was made by someone else. We bought a living room suit or a chair and ottoman combo, and let the designer make the choice as to what style and size stool went best with the look. The use of footstools, however, is about a lot more than looks. If you've got issues with feet and ankles that swell, or poor circulation in your lower extremities, the height and firmness of the stool matters more than its looks.
If you have a healthy circulatory system, and aren't experiencing problems with edema (swelling) of your feet and ankles, then chances are your stool or ottoman is probably just fine for you to use as is. Its' top should be about level with the seat of the chair or sofa. For some people, those with swelling at the ankles and ongoing problems of that sort with their calves, ankles and feet, then choosing a stool that is slightly higher than your seat allows for elevation of those parts of the body, letting gravity help pull some of that excess fluid away from the swollen areas. If you like your footstool, you can simply add a cushion a couple of inches thick to the top to make the necessary height adjustment.
Storage Footstools
For those who suffer from poor circulation to the feet, leaving their feet constantly cold and often feeling a bit numb, a stool that is slightly lower than the seat level of the chair allows gravity help out the circulatory system in providing adequate blood supply to those most distant bodily appendages.
So, don't choose footstools simply because they look good or match your other furniture. Choose the ones that allow you, personally, to get the most out of them as truly healthy, comfortable places to rest your feet.
